Here's what's new and exciting for the 2016-2017 school year!
PRE-K: Pre-K at PS46 is all new for the 2016-2017 school year. Four year olds will start the year learning about Cezanne's apples as they begin to explore art reproductions and learn about shapes and colors. Our young artists will begin their sensory experiences in art using new materials and art tools. They will thrive creatively as they are given choices, learn to make decisions and form opinions about art through having new tactile experiences. Many basic art concepts will be explored that will develop language arts skills, visual perceptual skills and kinesthetic skills. This will form a strong educational foundation for critical thinking skills and creative thinking.
KINDERGARTEN: Kindergarten artists are doing many different lessons that have subjects that include: Architecture, History, Art History, Literacy, Social Studies, Writing and Math concepts. Starting in Kindergarten through the upper grades, students' art projects continue to integrate these subjects learning the New York State Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), following the New York City Blueprint for the Arts (Visual Arts).
We are creating artwork using drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design techniques. These areas of art making will continue to be explored in greater depth through the upper grades.
Our students have been introduced to student driven art rubrics and are using them as they work on their art projects. They have been enriching their communication skills by turning and talking to their partners about their artwork and many topics that relate to art and the world they live in. In June, Kindergarten artwork will be displayed in the gymnasium for the Stepping Up celebration!
FIRST GRADE: First grade artists are creating art projects that are inspired by important artists and styles of art. They are introduced to these artists through literacy and images on the Smartboard. We are working on improving our questioning techniques during turn and talk by having partners to guide us with our artwork.
We are creating student driven art rubrics with tasks that help us self reflect on our art projects. Reading and writing the tasks in our rubrics, become an inspiration for the completion of our projects.
Artists who complete work early are creating extended art projects which are student driven and differentiated. Awareness is forming about the relationship between doing our best work and reaching our goals.
SECOND GRADE - FOURTH GRADE: Second grade, third grade and fourth grade artists learn to relate history to the world around them through art. They are also using the elements and principles of design to interpret and create art using new art techniques.
We look at historical photographs and artwork and become inspired to create original artwork from our own experiences. We compare the world of yesterday to today. Our student driven questioning techniques are expanding to include open ended questions in our turn and talks. If art projects are completed early, artists are creating extended projects which are student driven and differentiated.
We are coordinating the use of our Art Studio Art Rubric with our Art project checklist which is a way for every student to track their progress during art making self reflections. Everyone is encouraged to reach their art goals through cooperative learning in an exploratory, workshop atmosphere.
FIFTH GRADE: Fifth grade artists identify and understand more about the world around them. They can use this knowledge to analyze and create art using the elements and principles of design with deeper understanding. Deeper understanding is created when students compare different styles of art and discover how and why they were developed.
The Art Studio has a workshop atmosphere where students are greatly encouraged to collaborate their ideas about art. Our artists learn to evaluate their own artwork and their partner's artwork. They use student-to-student questioning techniques, art vocabulary, an art rubric and art project checklist, and choice driven inspiration.
Before graduating, students learn to create art studies that show the process of developing a strong art composition. They develop greater insight about their extended projects and use advanced drawing techniques with greater purpose. In June their artwork will be displayed in the auditorium on 5th grade graduation day! The relationship between goal achievement and the path to career and college readiness is shaped by their creativity in the PS46 Art Studio.
